Mother Quintella Dawson Sledge (Quinnie) 77, unexpectedly went home to be with the Lord on June 24, 2009. Quintella, affectionately known as Quinnie, was born on February 1, 1932 in Evansville, IN to the late Philmore and Bessie Shelton Dawson. She and her brother Alfred moved with their parents to Akron, Ohio in 1936. She attended Akron Public Schools and worked at the A. Polskys Company and Little Tikes.
She was a member of Unity Holiness Ministries Church of God In Christ, where she served on the Mother’s Board and in various capacities at the Church, under the leadership of Pastor A. Carver Walker. Mother Sledge was known for her soft-spoken words of encouragement and counseling, and for her kind-heartedness. Her heart and home were always open to those in need of comfort.
Quintella was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Archie Sr., sister, Elnora McClure, and daughter, Betty J. Williams.
She will forever live in the hearts of her daughter, Patricia Phillips; son Archie Jr., both of Akron, and son Elder Steven W. Sledge of Dallas TX.; 8 grandchildren; great-granddaughter, Grace Phillips (the apple of her eye), and 21 other great-grandchildren; 16 great great-grandchildren; brother, Alfred O. (Shirley Jean) Dawson, many loving nieces, nephews, relatives, spiritual sons and daughters, friends and her church family.
Mother Sledge’s Homegoing Celebration will be July 6, 2009 at The House of the Lord, 1650 Diagonal Rd., Akron, OH 44320 at 1 p.m. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. until time of service. Bishop T. D. Jakes eulogizing; Bishop J. Delano Ellis and Pastor A.C. Walker officiating; Bishop F. Josephus Johnson, host Pastor. Interment at Mt. Peace Cemetery. Procession will form and condolences may be sent to 1530 Bryden Drive, Akron OH 44313.
